The $300 figure is realistic, but only if you spend it in the right order: heat control first, enclosure second, everything else last.

  • Water bowl: A heavy ceramic dog or cat bowl from a dollar store works as well as a branded reptile dish, provided it is stable and shallow enough that the snake cannot easily tip or soak in it. Spend the savings on the thermostat.

  • Buying an undersized or oversized enclosure. After those two, the rest can wait. Better hides, a larger water dish, an infrared thermometer, and a Bluetooth hygrometer that logs trends are all incremental improvements you can pick up as they go on sale.
