It is comfortably more than a single-bay enclosure with one drive, and comfortably less than a four-bay x86 unit loaded with enough storage to justify the chassis. The entire job of this guide is deciding what that $600 should buy β€” and, just as importantly, what it should not.

Below is a complete, working setup: a two-bay Synology DS223j, two 4TB CMR NAS drives running in a mirrored array, a UPS that lets the NAS shut itself down safely during a power cut, a short Ethernet cable, and a portable USB drive for an off-device backup. It totals $572.94 before tax, leaving roughly $27 of headroom for shipping and sales tax. Every part was chosen to work with the others β€” the UPS signals the NAS over USB, the drives are CMR and NAS-rated, and the backup drive plugs straight into the enclosure's USB port.

Be clear about what this buys you. It will automatically pull photos off your family's phones, serve files to every computer in the house over SMB, stream video to devices that can already play the file's original format, and run a scheduled backup every night without you thinking about it. It will not transcode 4K HEVC for a phone on cellular data, run Docker containers or virtual machines, host a dozen simultaneous users, or give you more than about 3.6TB of protected space. The enclosure takes 33% ($199.99). On paper that looks backwards β€” you are paying more for an empty box than for the drive you will actually fill. The justification is DSM. Synology's software handles phone photo backup, remote access, snapshot scheduling, and backup automation without a command line, and it is the single biggest factor in whether a first-time NAS owner actually uses the thing six months later. A $159 TerraMaster with similar ARM silicon saves you $40 and costs you a weekend of forum reading. That is a fine trade for a hobbyist and a bad one for a household that wants it to simply work.

The remaining 30% is protection and insurance: 10% ($59.99) for a UPS that lets the NAS shut down cleanly during an outage, 14% ($84.99) for a USB drive holding an off-device copy, and 1% ($7.99) for a cable. The final 5% β€” about $27 β€” is a deliberate buffer for sales tax and shipping. The difference between a $159 generic ARM box and a $199 Synology is the difference between a setup wizard, working mobile apps, a documented backup tool, and a support forum β€” versus a weekend of troubleshooting permissions.
  • The UPS: A power cut during a write or during a rebuild is one of the few events that can corrupt an array that is otherwise healthy. Sixty dollars buys automatic safe shutdown. Three hundred dollars of drives is what it protects.

Where to Save

  • Ethernet cabling and switches: Any Cat5e patch cable handles gigabit at home distances for around $5. Cat6 and Cat6a buy you nothing here because the DS223j's port tops out at 1GbE. Do not buy a switch unless your router genuinely has no free port β€” and if you do, a $18 TP-Link TL-SG108 is enough.
  • The backup drive: The off-device copy does not need to be fast, redundant, or new. A portable USB drive you already own, or a $85 4TB portable, does the job. Do not spend $250 on a second NAS for backups at this budget.
  • RAM and caching: The DS223j's 1GB of DDR4 is soldered and cannot be upgraded, and the model has no NVMe cache slot. That removes two of the most common budget leaks in NAS builds β€” there is nothing to spend on here, so close the tab.

Before you open anything, pick the location. The NAS needs a spot with open airflow near your router, ideally not inside a closed cabinet β€” two spinning drives in an enclosed space will run warmer than they need to, and heat is one of the few things that genuinely shortens drive life. You need two outlets: one for the NAS power brick and one for the UPS. If your router is on the floor, put the NAS on a shelf above it rather than beside it, and keep the UPS on the floor where spilled liquid is less likely to reach it.

  • Do not buy a network switch until you have confirmed your router has no free LAN port. Most home routers have four, and the DS223j only needs one.
  • Skip Cat6a and shielded cable. Cat5e handles gigabit over home distances for about $5, and the NAS's port cannot go faster than 1GbE regardless.
  • Reuse an external USB drive you already own for the first backup instead of buying the WD Elements. It is the single easiest $85 to save without weakening the build.
  • Skip the extended warranty on the enclosure. The failure risk sits with the drives, and both IronWolf units already include three years of Rescue data-recovery coverage.
  • Check the used market for the enclosure specifically β€” a clean used two-bay Synology can save $60–$100 β€” but only if DSM still receives security updates for that model and the drive trays and power brick are included.
  • Do not buy 2TB drives to save money. Per usable terabyte they usually cost more than 4TB, and you will be replacing them within a year.

Common Mistakes

  • Buying desktop or SMR drives to save $20 per disk. On a two-bay array, an SMR drive that drops out during a rebuild can take the whole pool with it. This is the one place in the build where the cheap option is genuinely dangerous.
  • Spending the budget on a four-bay enclosure and leaving nothing for drives. A NAS with no drives does nothing. Drives are 37% of this build for a reason β€” capacity and reliability come first, bays come later.
  • Treating RAID as a backup. SHR and RAID 1 protect you from one drive failing. They do not protect you from deleting a folder by accident, ransomware encrypting your shares, or a fire. Without the off-device copy, mirrored data is still a single point of failure.
  • Skipping the UPS to save $60, then losing power during the initial pool build or a rebuild. Power-loss corruption during a write is one of the few failures that a mirror cannot recover from.
  • Assuming the RAM can be upgraded later. The DS223j's 1GB is soldered to the board. If upgradeable memory matters for your workload, you need a different enclosure, not a future purchase.
  • Hiding the NAS in a closed cabinet or media console for aesthetic reasons. Restricted airflow raises drive temperatures, and sustained heat is one of the few factors that measurably shortens drive lifespan.

Upgrade Roadmap

The first upgrade is capacity, and it is the one you will feel soonest. When the 3.6TB array starts filling β€” likely 18 to 30 months in if you are backing up phone photos and some video β€” replace the two 4TB drives with 2 x 8TB IronWolf drives at roughly $179 each. In a two-bay Synology you can either migrate the drives one at a time (slow but keeps the array online) or back up to the USB drive, rebuild from scratch with the new pair, and restore. Budget about $360 for the pair and an evening of your time.

The second upgrade is the platform, and it is the one that unlocks new capabilities rather than more space. Moving to a Synology DS224+ ($299.99) or a UGREEN DXP2800 ($349.99 and frequently discounted) gets you an Intel x86 CPU, upgradeable RAM, NVMe cache slots, and 2.5GbE networking. That is what enables Plex hardware transcoding for 4K, Docker containers, virtual machines, and multiple simultaneous heavy users. Your existing drives move across without reformatting, so the effective cost is the enclosure minus whatever you sell the DS223j for. Prioritize this only after you have actually outgrown the DS223j β€” buying x86 before you have a use for it is the most common way budget NAS builders waste $300.

The third upgrade is the network layer, and it only makes sense after the second. To see 2.5GbE speeds you need a 2.5GbE switch and a 2.5GbE adapter on your computer β€” roughly $100–$150 combined β€” and gigabit Ethernet on a single client will still cap you at about 110 MB/s no matter what the NAS supports. Upgrade the UPS last. A $150–$190 unit with an LCD and pure sine-wave output is a genuine improvement, but the $60 unit already does the job that matters: a clean shutdown. Spend the next dollar on drives instead.
