With careful selection, you can assemble a complete, functional 20-gallon reef system for well under $1,000 using proven, budget-friendly components. This guide breaks down a 10-item list that fits a 20-gallon long tank, prioritizing the pieces that matter most: lighting, protein skimming, and water movement.

Budget Philosophy

We started with the most critical factor for reef success: stable water parameters. That means investing in a reliable protein skimmer (nutrient export), quality lighting for corals, and a robust heater. These three categories account for nearly 50% of the total budget. The tank itself is a standard glass aquarium—cheap and functional. We chose a 20-gallon long because its shallow depth lets weaker budget lights work effectively, and it maintains decent water stability without requiring huge amounts of salt or rock. Moving down the priority list, the filter (AquaClear 50) is a workhorse, but it's not a reef filter—it aids in mechanical/biological filtration while the rock and skimmer do the heavy lifting. Circulation from a simple Hydor powerhead is sufficient for a tank this size. Where we saved: the tank, sand, and salt are all budget-friendly choices that perform just as well as premium alternatives for a beginner. The only large cost is the Viparspectra LED, which rivals fixtures costing twice as much.

Where to Splurge

  • Lighting: The LED fixture is the single most important investment because it determines which corals you can keep. A cheap light may only support soft corals, but a good budget LED like the Viparspectra 165W grows LPS and mixed SPS. Skimping here means limiting your reef potential and possibly making a second purchase later.
  • Protein Skimmer: Nutrient control makes or breaks a nano reef. A reliable skimmer (Coralife Super Skimmer 65) removes excess waste before it fuels nuisance algae. Without one, you'll battle water-quality swings and need far more frequent water changes.
  • Heater: Temperature stability is crucial for reefs. A quality heater like Eheim Jager holds temperature variance to ±1°F, while a cheap heater might swing 3–4°F, stressing corals and fish.

Where to Save

  • Tank & Stand: A bare glass aquarium is just a box; there's no performance gain from name brands. The 20L Aqueon is $50 and perfectly fine. Save by using a sturdy existing table or DIY stand rather than buying a costly cabinet.
  • Powerhead & Circulation: This 20-gallon tank only needs 240–300 GPH of flow. The Hydor Koralia Nano 240 is adequate at $30; higher-end controllable wavemakers are nice but not necessary at this tank size.
  • Salt & Sand: Instant Ocean Reef Crystals is a solid, industry-standard salt mix and much cheaper than premium blends. Similarly, CaribSea Arag-Alive sand adds buffering but you can substitute a plain aragonite sand (or even bare bottom) if you're on a tight budget.

Start by placing the Aqueon 20L on your stand or table—measure it level first. Rinse the sand thoroughly in a bucket (though CaribSea pre-washed, a quick rinse reduces clouding) and add it to the bottom. Then create your aquascape with the CaribSea LifeRock; try to leave valleys at the front and archways for fish to swim through. Attach the Hydor powerhead low in the tank, aiming at the rockwork, not directly at corals. Install the AquaClear filter on the back rim and the Coralife skimmer on the opposite side; both need to hang securely. Place the Eheim heater next to the powerhead, horizontal and fully submerged. Mix the salt and water in a separate 5-gallon bucket using a powerhead and heater: add 1/2 cup of salt per gallon (roughly 35 ppt). Pour mixed saltwater into the tank until it covers the rock and sand. Now cycle the tank: introduce a pinch of fish food or a piece of raw shrimp as an ammonia source, and test water daily. You'll see ammonia spike, then nitrite, then nitrate as beneficial bacteria establish; this can take 4–6 weeks. Maintain temperature 76–80°F and PH around 8.2. Once ammonia and nitrite read 0 and nitrates stable under 20 ppm, you're ready for your first two hardy corals (e.g., green star polyps, Zoanthids) and a clownfish. Run the cleanup crew—snails and hermit crabs—to begin the ecosystem.

Budget Tips

  • Skip the aquarium stand if you have a sturdy, level dresser or desk; just check it can hold 230 lbs. Save $60.
  • Buy a digital refractometer (instead of a plastic hydrometer) for $20 to save accuracy headaches; it's the only extra cost not in our product list.
  • Purchase salt mix in a 200-gallon bucket ($60) if you plan to expand, but for a 20-gallon, the 50-gallon box is sufficient and costs less upfront.
