How We Test Mattresses: Review Atlas Methodology

We debunk mattress review myths and expose our exact lab tests for pressure, motion, cooling, and durability—so you can buy wisely.

We all think we know what makes a good mattress: it's just whatever feels comfy when you lie down. That's what the mattress industry wants you to believe. But if it were that simple, you'd be able to pick a bed in 10 minutes. Instead, you're stuck in a showroom, flopping around on 20 mattresses, and everything starts feeling like the same squishy rectangle.

The truth is, comfort is only half the story—and it's the half you're worst at judging.

That's why we built our own mattress testing methodology. In this post, I'm pulling back the curtain on exactly how Review Atlas tests beds. You'll learn what the numbers mean, where we've messed up (so you don't), and what actually matters for your sleep and your wallet.

The Common Misconception

The biggest mistake most buyers make? Believing that mattress comfort is purely personal. "It's all about your body type, your sleep position, your temperature—no test can tell you if it's right for you." So they skip review sites and just guess.

But that's wrong. While comfort preferences are subjective, the performance of a mattress is not. Does it isolate motion? How much pressure does it put on your shoulders? How quickly does it sag under pressure? These are measurable. And when a mattress does those things well, it feels comfortable to most people. When it doesn't, no amount of fancy quilting fixes it.

Experts (including product engineers and sleep researchers) have spent decades quantifying sleep surface performance. We've adopted many of their techniques, adapted them for real-world budgets, and added our own torture tests. The result is that we can tell you, with confidence, whether a $299 mattress is a steal or a spine trap.

What Experts Actually Know

To test a mattress properly, you need to measure what actually affects sleep.

Pressure relief – The body creates high-pressure points at the shoulders, hips, and heels. We use a pressure mapping sensor with 2,000+ points to measure how evenly body weight is distributed. A good mattress should reduce peak pressure below the tissue-damage threshold (around 30 mmHg). That's the same tech used in hospital beds to prevent bedsores. We compare the pressure maps of every mattress in our lab, using a standardized 160-lb male dummy and a 140-lb female dummy. We're also adding a 200-lb dummy this year because heavyweight sleepers are underserved.

Motion isolation – If you share a bed, a partner's tossing and turning can wreck your sleep. We put a weighted ball on one side of the mattress and a decibel meter on the other. We drop the ball from a set height and measure how much vibration travels across the surface. A score under 5 m/s² is excellent. Memory foam beds usually win; innersprings with pocketed coils can be surprisingly good.

Edge support – The area near the edge is notorious for collapsing. We measure how much the perimeter compresses when a 220-lb weight is placed there. We also sit on the edge like you would when putting on shoes. If it sinks more than 2 inches, that's a fail. Strong edges mean you get more usable surface area—and more bed for your buck.

Durability – A mattress loses support over time. We accelerate that process with a motorized roller that goes back and forth across the bed for 30,000 cycles—simulating about 10 years of use. We measure firmness before and after. If it changes by more than 15%, it's not a mattress we'd recommend for the long haul.

Temperature regulation – Overheating is a top complaint. We measure heat retention by wrapping the mattress in a thermal blanket and monitoring how fast it dissipates heat through the layers. We also check the breathability of the cover and foam. Note: no mattress can actively cool you; they can only stop trapping heat. We rate "more breathable" as better.

Off-gassing – New mattresses release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We measure total VOC levels in a sealed chamber for 72 hours. We don't dismiss any mattress solely based on off-gassing, but it's a quality signal.

That's our standard suite. We also do tests for firmness, sinkage, and bounce. But the six above are the pillars.

How we score

Every mattress gets a 1–10 score in each category, weighted for the average sleeper:

  • Pressure relief: 25%
  • Motion isolation: 20%
  • Durability: 20%
  • Edge support: 15%
  • Temperature regulation: 10%
  • Off-gassing: 5%
  • Firmness (comfort): 5%

The weighted total becomes the "Review Atlas Score." But we don't stop there. We also segment scores by sleeper type: back, side, stomach, heavy, light. Because a mattress that's great for a 130-lb side sleeper might be terrible for a 230-lb stomach sleeper.

The Real Data

Enough theory. Let's share some actual numbers from our latest round of testing.

Take the DreamCloud Premier (our current best luxury mattress). On the pressure map, it registered a peak of 22 mmHg at the shoulders for our 160-lb dummy—well below the 30 mmHg threshold. Motion isolation? We measured 3.1 m/s². That's outstanding. Edge support? Less than 1 inch of compression with the 220-lb weight. Durability? After 30,000 cycles, the firmness dropped by only 8%. That's why it earned a 9.2 overall.

Then look at the Zinus Green Tea (a budget favorite). Its pressure peak was 34 mmHg—just above the threshold. Motion isolation was 4.5 (still good), but edge support failed: the perimeter compressed 2.7 inches. Durability? 19% firmness change. That mattress costs $199 for a queen, but you'll likely replace it in 3–4 years. That's not automatically a bad deal—some people need that price point. But it's a different animal.

But we're also aware of our blind spots. We test on standardized dummies, not human bodies. A 140-lb dummy can't tell us if a mattress feels uncomfortably firm. So we bring in human testers—over 20 of them, diverse in size, sleep position, and temperature preference—and we blind-test every bed for at least a week. Their feedback adjusts the comfort score.

That's how we caught a surprising data point: the Nectar mattress regularly scored great on pressure maps but got "too hot" comments from 6 out of 20 sleepers. Our thermal tests showed average breathability, but the cover's moisture-wicking treatment wasn't enough for some. We now weight temperature regulation higher for hot sleepers.

Mistakes to Avoid

Even with our methodology, you can still make these mistakes when reading mattress reviews:

1. Focusing only on the overall score. A 9.0 might be great for a side sleeper but average for a stomach sleeper. Always look at the breakdown for your sleep position.

2. Ignoring body weight. Most reviewers test as average-sized adults. If you weigh over 230 lbs or under 130 lbs, a mattress's feel changes dramatically. Look for brands that are honest about weight limits.

3. Skimming past durability data. A cheap mattress can feel amazing in the store but collapse in two years. Ask about the firmness change after testing. If a site doesn't measure it, treat its longevity claims with suspicion.

4. Getting sucked into "perfect" reviews. No mattress is perfect. If you only see glowing comments, you're reading marketing copy. Real reviews mention trade-offs.

5. Buying on sale pressure. The "Casper knock-off" on sale for $249 might be tempting, but if it fails our 15% durability threshold, you'll be buying it twice in the same span as a pricier bed that lasts a decade.

What to Look For Instead

Instead of gimmicks, when you're shopping for a mattress, look for these things:

Firmness that suits your sleep position. Side sleepers typically need soft to medium (4-5 on our 1-10 scale). Back sleepers: medium-firm (6-7). Stomach sleepers: firmer (7-8). If a review site doesn't tell you the firmness in a quantitative way, move on.

Layer construction. High-quality foam is dense (4-5 lbs per cubic foot for memory foam). Cheap foam is lighter and degrades faster. On a $200 mattress, you're almost certainly getting low-density foam. That's okay if you know the trade-off.

Warranty and trial. A better indicator of confidence than any marketing buzzword. A 10-year warranty is standard; 20-year or lifetime is excellent. But read the fine print—sagging must be deeper than 1 inch to count.

Real-world reviews. Look for reviews that mention specific sleep positions and weights. At Review Atlas, we tag every review with "tested by [name]" and include a detailed "for whom" section.

The value equation. Value isn't about the lowest price. It's about cost-per-year. A $400 mattress that lasts 5 years costs $80/year. A $1,000 mattress that lasts 15 years costs $67/year. The more expensive bed might be the better value.
