What We Tested

AHAM's own rule of thumb is that CADR should be at least two-thirds of your room's square footage — which works out to roughly 5 air changes per hour with an 8-foot ceiling, at maximum fan speed. Manufacturers often advertise twice that square footage, which quietly drops you to about 3.7 ACH. Still at max speed.
Now drop to low, where you'll actually live. Low-speed airflow is typically 25–35% of rated. My Coway, rated 240 CFM at max, moved roughly 70 CFM at its lowest setting. In a 120 sq ft bedroom (960 cu ft), that's about 4.4 air changes per hour — genuinely good, and enough to hold a bedroom under 10 µg/m³ through a bad smoke day with the door closed. Noise at sleep-friendly speeds
