Brightness, measured in nits, is the most critical spec for daylight viewing. A TV with 2000 nits of peak brightness will hold its own against sunlight that would destroy a typical 500-nit model. Equally important is how the TV handles reflections—special coatings and matte finishes make a far bigger difference than many shoppers realize.

Aim for a peak brightness of at least 800 nits for rooms with moderate windows, and 1,500 nits or more if the TV sits opposite direct sunlight. HDR content benefits greatly from higher peak brightness, but for SDR, 600 nits can still be acceptable if the room isn't too bright.
Not necessarily. Modern OLEDs like the Samsung S95D and LG G4 have reached brightness levels that can hold their own in sunlit spaces, and black levels remain perfect even with ambient light. However, older OLEDs and those with glossy screens may suffer from reflections, so check the anti-reflective coating before buying.
Matte screens reduce direct glare and mirror-like reflections, making them better for rooms with windows facing the TV. Glossy screens offer higher contrast and perceived sharpness but turn windows and lamps into distracting reflections. In an average bright living room, most users prefer a low-gloss or matte finish.
